Rather Mela 2018 At Salt Lake Central Park,Karunamoyee

Celebrated with splendor and majesty ‘Rathayatra’ is one of the much awaited festivals in India and specially in the eastern parts of the country where holy chariots pulled by people as a part of this grand fiesta attracts thousands of National and International tourists to West Bengal to witness the rich heritage of Kolkata. The much decorated ‘Rather Mela’ organized by Bidhannagar Sree Chaitanya Bhagawat Samaj,at the Central Park grounds of Saltlake , has been an iconic fair over the years where millions of visitors have experienced culture, tradition and ethnicity along with authentic food, activities and a binge of other attractions.

Rather mela comes year after year and brings back countless emotions, scenes, sights and smells from the deepest corners of the heart, feelings which have lost their way in the crowded melee of present day busy schedule. Beginning on the 13th of July, 2018, Rather mela will witness Lord Jagannath, one of the ten incarnations of Vishnu, being brought out, fifteen days after his annual bath. Placed on a chariot along with his elder brother, Balbhadra, and his sister, Subhadra, the sacred Rath will be drawn to the Central Park fair grounds, where Lord Jagannath will rest for a week. The worshippers will continue to shower their offerings on the Lord for a week, and Prasad shall be distributed.

The Rath itself is a curious thing. It is the specimen of old chariot-making. It is generally made of wood. Its turrets are like those of a church. It has a covering of gold and silver. It has all sorts of paintings and wooden figures all about it. The Rath is drawn by men and women with the help of ropes tied to it, while Prasad is distributed by the priests. The Rathayatra festival shall last till the 6th of August 2018, at the Central Park fair grounds.

Needless to say, the mela is a delight for the kids. Not only are the kids found savoring lozenges holding their mothers’ hands but there are kid brigades, who decorate Rath with multicoloured strips of paper and flowers and then take it around the whole community. The Rather mela is like a fairyland which the children wait for with bated breath throughout the year. From the various knick-knacks for rannabati to the delicious kochuri and singaras – the fair is actually worth the wait. Starting from toys, flutes, animals, the decorated stalls offer a variety of delicacies including jilipis, khurmas, and what not!

The mela also offers a lot to buyers who plan to redecorate their places during the monsoon season, with plants and flowers up for exhibition and sale. From the kitchen to the living room, gardens to the dressing tables, the fair promises to give you a plethora of options and leave you spoilt for choices. It’s that time of the year where people come together to celebrate this occasion in numbers and meet over long awaited adda, good food and joyrides.

The Jagannath darshan shall be wrapped with a plethora of cultural programs in the form of bhajans, baul songs, kirtans and other devotional services, which is not only an exhibition of the cultural mélange, but a social milieu of great delight and tranquility.
