Rising youngster Subhman Gill shines in KKR’s victory over CSK

He is just 18 years and 237 days old, and Subhman Gill is already showing why the Knight Riders think tank invested in such a fresh young talent like him, as he almost effortlessly breezed through the much experienced Chennai bowling line up to propel KKR to a much needed victory over the Super Kings.

Chasing a target of 178, what looked like a really good score at the mid innings break, the young Knight brigade gave the team the crucial impetus required to achieve the target with relative ease, with more than 2 overs to spare.

Chennai Super Kings started well with Shane Watson and Suresh Raina giving them a brisk start and looked all set to post an above par score of around 200 on a slow track at the Eden Gardens on Thursday evening. The KKR spinners then pulled it back for the team in the middle overs by picking up crucial wickets at regular intervals and restricting the much needed boundaries from being scored with ease. But CSK skipper MS Dhoni stepped on the gas towards the end, and extended his purple patch by scoring a 43 not out of just 25 deliveries to take CSK to a decent total.

Had Subhman Gill not dropped a powerfully struck pull shot off Kuldeep Yadav at the deep square leg boundary, chances were that CSK would have been restricted to under 165.

KKR had a tricky start to their chase with Lungi Ngidi picking up the destructive Chris Lynn in the first over itself, despite being deposited for a couple of mighty sixes.

While Sunil Narine was dropped twice by the otherwise electric Ravindra Jadeja, he kept playing his usual shots with the ball flying all around the park. Robin Uthappa had a difficult day at the office, and was soon dismissed for a paltry score of 6 from 8 balls. With Nitish Rana missing out from Thursday’s encounter, young Subhman Gill had a bright opportunity to fill up his shoes by coming up the order and he grabbed his chances with both hands.

With the Knights under a bit of pressure at 67 for 3, Gill stitched a vital partnership with Rinku Singh and later with KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik to see the team over the line. The teenager played a really matured knock of 57 off just 36 deliveries. It was a very sensible innings etched with classy shots and fast running between the wickets that showed a lot of grit and character in this rising teen talent.

The more than 61 thousand crowd at the Eden Gardens witnessed what could be a turning point in the career of this extremely talented Under – 19 World Cup winning middle order batsman. The KKR team management, who showed a lot of faith on young Gill, was understandably overwhelmed at the sheer brilliance of this performance on a big stage!

Sunil Narine was adjudged the man of the match with an all round performance of 2 for 20, in 4 overs, and a flashy 32 off 20 at the top. Skipper Karthik picked up the Super Striker Award as he continued his good form with an unbeaten 45 off just 18 balls to take his team home.

Dinesh Karthik was all praise for the youngster at the post match presentation ceremony and said that he is really hopeful to see Subhman Gill in India colours in the forthcoming years.
“I was very pleased that I was promoted to number 4, and I was feeling that I dropped the catch, so I had to make sure that I finish my work for the team,” opined a smiling Gill after the match.

Kolkata Knight Riders is next up against Mumbai Indians on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
